When most people think of Bali, they think of paradise, beautiful beaches, luxury villas, beach clubs, parties, and incredible sunsets. And while Bali is all of those things, there is another side of the island that many visitors never truly take the time to understand.

Bali is often called the Island of the Gods, and for good reason. This is a deeply spiritual place filled with temples, daily offerings, ceremonies, traditions, and beliefs that have been part of Balinese culture for generations. For the people who live here, Bali is not just a beautiful destination—it is home and, in many ways, a sacred land.

Unfortunately, I think many tourists forget that.

It is easy to arrive in Bali, enjoy the parties and luxury, and never stop to consider the culture and spirituality surrounding you. Sometimes it feels as though visitors treat the island like one big playground without respecting the fact that they are guests in a place that holds deep religious and cultural importance to its people.

There is also a side of Bali that doesn’t always appear on Instagram. Behind the beautiful resorts and expensive restaurants, you can also see poverty and people experiencing difficult circumstances, including homelessness and housing insecurity. It can be surprising to see so much luxury existing so close to people who are struggling.

That is what traveling has taught me: every place has more than one side.

Bali is beautiful, but its true beauty is not just found in its beaches or luxury resorts. It is found in its people, culture, traditions, and spirituality. As visitors, we should enjoy everything a place has to offer, but we should also take the time to understand and respect the people and culture that make that place special.

Bali is more than a vacation destination.

It is someone’s home.

It is someone’s culture.

And for many people, it is a sacred place that deserves to be respected.
