A thought came to me yesterday while I was having a conversation with a friend, and I think it’s something very important for anyone traveling abroad—whether you’re going for a short vacation or planning to live overseas full time.
The reality is this: the money difference is always going to be an issue.
It’s pretty simple. The moment you step into another country as an American, you are seen differently. It doesn’t matter what you wear or what you say—people often assume you have money. And with that assumption comes a certain level of risk.
When I say you become a “target,” I don’t just mean extreme situations like kidnapping or ransom. It can be much more subtle—and sometimes more common—than that. You could deal with pickpockets, scams, or even robberies. In some places, there are corrupt police officers who might try to intimidate you, even going as far as walking you to an ATM to pay them off just to avoid trouble.
But it doesn’t stop there.
There’s also the issue of fake friendships. You may meet people who seem genuine at first, but over time, their intentions start to show. And for men who travel and get into relationships abroad, this can become even more complicated. Suddenly, there’s always a problem: a lost job, a sick family member, a broken phone, or a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” that just happens to require your financial help. The list of emergencies can feel endless, and it often starts only after they realize you’re the one with access to money.
So it raises an important question: who can you really trust while traveling?
The truth is, many people you meet may have some kind of angle or “game” they’re playing. Not everyone—but enough to make you cautious.
Of course, situations like this can happen back home in the United States too. But when you’re in a foreign country, everything is amplified. You’re out of your comfort zone, you may not fully understand the culture or language, and that can make you more vulnerable in ways you didn’t expect.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t travel—far from it. Traveling is one of the best experiences you can have. But it does mean you need to stay aware, move smart, and understand the reality of the environment you’re stepping into.
Because the truth is, the world isn’t just different when you travel…
The way people see you is different too.
