It’s been a week since I arrived, and I’ve already learned so much about what makes traveling smoother—especially if you’re heading to a country where you don’t speak the local language. Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or with family, these are a few essentials I highly recommend:
1. Google Translate
Yes, it sounds obvious—but trust me, you’ll need it. If you don’t speak the local language, this app is a lifesaver. It makes basic communication so much easier, whether you’re asking for directions, shopping, or just trying to have a quick conversation.
2. Google Lens (Built Into Google App)
This one is underrated. Open the Google app, and on the main screen you’ll see a little camera icon on the right-hand side. Tap it, point your camera at anything written in another language, and select Translate at the bottom.
It instantly converts text into your language right on the screen. Think about how helpful that is: menus, product labels, signs—basically anything you can point your phone at. I’ve used it countless times already, and it’s been a game changer.
3. Meta AI Glasses
If you want to take things to the next level, get the Meta AI Glasses. They’re more than just a camera or music device—they can actually do live translations. You can hold a conversation in another language, and within a few seconds, the glasses translate and speak back what the other person said.
The only downside? Live translation drains the battery faster. That said, the newer versions are supposed to have improved this issue.
4. Apple AirPods with Live Translation
I haven’t tried these yet, but I’ve heard the newest Apple AirPods also support live translation—and they cover even more languages than the Meta glasses. Unfortunately, they were released just after I left, otherwise I would’ve picked them up.

Final Thought:
Traveling to a new country can feel intimidating when you don’t know the language, but with these tools, it’s easier than ever to connect, explore, and feel confident no matter where you are.
